PERI - the making of

In september we introduced to you our newest collection.

PERI is a collaboration with visual artist, Nicky Myny.
Each jewel contains our trademark, blue oxidised brass, which is combined with fragments of Nicky’s paintings.
The shape of the designs is characterized by architectural lines. They symbolize the Périphérique of Paris and the Leuvense Vaart, the framework of our meeting.

In this blogpost I would like to give you a bit more insight in the different steps of the production process of the jewelry.

1/ First of all I forge the silver wire into the desired shape, the Parisian Périphérique and solder the ends together. This will serve as our structure for the jewel. After the soldering, the silver is put into a pickle solution to remove the lefto…

After the soldering, the silver is put into a pickle solution to remove the leftover flux and oxidation from the heating.

3/ For Brooch 03 I drill two holes.

5/ Now I can start joining the different elements, silver wire & brass plate. The brass elements are the ones that will be oxidised blue.

7/ For brooch 03 I attach the silver structure onto the wire that was sticking out of the brass plate. Like this we can create distance between the structure and the brass element.

9/ This is how the pieces come out when being oxidised. A process that is difficult to be shown as it happens inside an airtight box… So again, a lot of cleaning to be done 😅

11/ The fragments of the chosen paintings are printed on aluminium, and lasercut. After this I soften the edges and clean up the back, before they are implemented into the designs.

2/ A silver part is soldered onto the brass elements. Later in the process this part will be necessary to attach Nicky’s fragments onto. Just like the silver wire, they go into the pickle solution after soldering.

8/ Next up, I have a lot of cleaning up to do to come to this. Different types of files, brushes & sanding paper are used to achieve this. Like this the jewels are ready to be oxidised.

10/ After cleaning, these are ready to be matched with one of the cutouts from fragments of Nicky’s colorful paintings. Now I still have to prepare the aluminium prints.

12/ Some parts of the silver, like those from earrings 02, we chose to make black. Here they are drying before we can assemble the jewelry.
